Board an international flight bound for Beijing, eager to begin our China vacation. Spend the night aboard as our flight crosses the International Date Line.
After retrieving your luggage and clearing customs, your guide will accompany you to your deluxe accommodations.
Today you’ll begin your China sightseeing tour. The first stop is Tiananmen Square in the center of Beijing. Then head for the magnificent Forbidden City, which stood as the imperial palace for China from the Ming Dynasty until the end of the Qing Dynasty, a period of 500 years. Next you will visit the exquisite 15th century Temple of Heaven – to see the Imperial Ceiling of Heaven with its Echo Wall and the Nine-Dragon Cypress, more than 500 years old. In the evening, you will enjoy an authentic Peking Duck Banquet.
Today you’ll see and perhaps climb the Great Wall of China, one of the country’s most famous tourist attractions and one of the greatest man-made wonders of the world. It runs about 5,500 miles through 150 different counties. You will then have a Seminar on Chinese Jade Culture at a local Jade Museum. After lunch, tour the elegant Summer Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage site with the largest imperial garden in the world, and a favorite retreat for many of the emperors during the Qing Dynasty.
Today we continue our journey by flying to Xian, the capital of Shaanxi Province, one of the oldest cities in China. Xian is one of the Four Great Ancient Capitals of China with more than 3100 years of history. The city was known as “Chang’an” before Ming Dynasty. Xian is the eastern terminus of the Silk Road and home to the Terra Cotta Warriors. Upon arrival in Xian, your first stop will be at the Buddhist Jianfu Temple, where the towering Small Wild Goose Pagoda commands panoramic views of the city.
Free day at leisure.
Spend the day free or take the optional tour to witness the famous “Terra Cotta Warriors.” The serendipitous discovery of the Terra Cotta Warriors in 1974 has drawn throngs of visitors to Xian each year and ranks as one of the world’s most important recent archaeological finds. Three excavation pits have been opened to the public with a fourth underway. Spend some time admiring the fine troops, horses, and carriages in battle formation. Next, you’ll head to the Terracotta Replication Factory that actually re-made terracotta soldiers. After lunch, the motorcoach takes us back inside city limits to visit the North Square of Big Wild Goose Pagoda, a square built in Tang style as well as the largest fountain square in Asia.
Catch an early flight to Shanghai, which boasts the largest population of any city in China. You’ll spend some time soaking up the electric energy of the Bund – a riverside avenue showcasing international architecture and the world of high finance before visiting a Silk spinning Museum to learn how artists work with the delicate fabric.
Take this free day to explore Shanghai any way you wish – visit the staggeringly ancient displays at the Shanghai Museum, search for last-minute souvenirs in Yuyuan Market, or arrange to watch a gasp-inducing show of Chinese acrobatics.
All good things must come to an end. Board a return flight back home and bid farewell to China.
