Daguan Park

Discover Beautiful Kunming, China

Daguan Park is perched in the west of Kunming City, neighboring the captivating Dianchi Lake. The park is known for the grand Daguan Pavilion and the long couplet inside, facing West Hill Park on the other side. Gaguan Park is a breathtaking open area where trees, flowers, pavilions, bridges and waters come together harmoniously. Standing on the Daguan Pavilion, visitors can command a panoramic view of the park, water in Dianchi Lake rippling below and the scenery of West Hill in the distance. The magnificent pavilion, clusters of flowers and lush trees definitely make Daguan Park a great place to relax.

Daguan Pavilion was built in 1696, in the reign of Kangxi Period during the Qing dynasty. During the Qianlong Period, Sun Ranweng, a poor scholar, visited Daguan Pavilion and wrote a long couplet based on his experience there. The couplet consists of 180 Chinese characters, and it is believed to be the longest couplet in the world. The couplet has two parts, the first part praising the inviting scenery of Kunming, and the second part recalling the 2,000-year history of Yunan.

Daguan Park is counted among the four most famous pavilions in China, together with Yellow Crane Tower in Hubei, Yueyang Tower in Hunan and Tengwang Pavilion in Jiangxi Province. Many prestigious scholars, Mao Zedong and Guo Moruo for example, all spoke highly of Daguan Pavilion after visiting. On each festival, the magnificent gala is held in this park and multitudes of people would flock here to watch it.
