Sun Island, situated on the northern bank of the Songhua River, opposite Stalin Park, is the world-famous scenic area of Harbin city. It covers an area of more than 14 square miles (38 square kilometers) and is a great place to have a picnic, swim, and go camping with families and friends.
In the early 1980s, the song “on the Sun Island” by singer Zheng Xulan made the area famous. Sun Island, together with its nearby islands and sandbars make up the Sun Island Scenic Area, which is also a popular resort during summer vacation.
Based on original western-style architecture, the island represents Euro-American garden style. It can be divided into two parts, including a sightseeing area and convalescent area marked by the sign of “Sun Island” written by the famous calligrapher Zhao Puchu. Sightseeing area is composed of more than 20 scenic spots such as the Pavilion on the Water, the Sacred Cranes, Lilac Garden, the Long Bank and Weeping Willow, Sun Mountain, and others. Besides, there is a natural beach with an area of over 200 acres (90 hectares) on the Songhua River, on the south part of Sun Island, and is called River Island.
