Longsheng Rice Terrace lies in the Longsheng County, about 80 kilometers from Guilin City. With a history of more than 650 years, Longsheng Rice Terrace was built in Yuan Dynasty (1206AD-1368AD) and finished in the early Qing Dynasty. The whole scenic area reaches about 66 square kilometers and is divided into two sections. One is in Pingan Zhuang Ethnic Village and the other is Jinkeng Hongyao rice terraced field which is the largest and most beautiful terraces in Longsheng.
Built along the slope winding from the riverside up to the mountain top, the terraced fields separate the mountain into layers which take on different view in four seasons. The layers of water shine in the sun in Spring; the layers of green rice shoots in summer; the layers of rice turn golden in autumn and the layers frost in winter. The highest part rises 880 meters above sea level and the lowest rises 380 meters.
In the scenic area of Longji Rice Terrace live two ethnic groups, Zhuang and Yao. In Pingan Zhuang Ethnic Group, the featured culture like traditional ethnic costumes, the quaint Zhuang folk dance and melodious songs can be felt. There are several villages in Jinkeng Hongyao Rice Terrace. One at the foot of the mountain is Dazhai Yao Village where you can witness the local lifestyle and feel Yao ethnic culture.
Hiking is the favorite way to visit this scenic area. If hiking, remember to walk along flagstone paths. When watching the show in the villages, you should ask whether you are charged or not. The locals have the habit of leading the way and carrying the knapsacks. If you accept their service, you should ask how much you should pay. It is sure that you have to stay overnight in the scenic area so you have to book a room in advance.
