Shanghai hotels to pay royalties for background music
Eastday.com, China, June 20, 2004 - Star-level hotels in the eastern
China municipality of Shanghai will soon have to pay for the background music
they play in their lobbies, restaurants and guest rooms.The Music Copyright
Society of China has reached a deal with 14 four- and five-star hotels in
Shanghai on charging royalties for the music they play, which is "for commercial
rather than home entertainment purpose," said Fang Fang, an official with the
society's Shanghai bureau on Friday...

Shenzhen Daily June 25 ,2004 - Hotels in Shenzhen may soon start making
condoms available to control the spread of HIV/AIDS in Shenzhen. They could be
available within the year, said Zhang Yingji, a section chief of Shenzhen
Municipal Health Bureau. The condoms will be placed in hotel rooms throughout
Shenzhen and guests will pay to use them, according to the chief of the AIDS
control section of Shenzhen Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

Hotel Background Music Charges
to Skyrocket
CRI, May 12, 2004 - Charges for
hotel background music have been skyrocketing in Beijing since the current music
copyright agreement expired on April 10th this year. The Music Copyright Society
of China says the music fee in star-level hotels could rise by over 100 percent.
The 63 hotels affiliated to the Beijing Tourism Industry Association could enjoy
some discounts. Meanwhile, the Beijing Tourism Industry Association and Music
Copyright Society of China are discussing the contract renewal.

Most HK Hotels Booked out
Shenzhen Daily April 30, 2004 - Most of Hong
Kong's hotel rooms had been booked out for the May Day holidays, Hong Kong's
Financial Secretary Henry Tang said Wednesday. Some
hotels had increased their rates by 5 to 15 percent, the Shenzhen Special
Zone Daily quoted the financial secretary as saying. He said nearly 440,000
mainlanders were expected to visit Hong Kong during the holidays.
The golden week would bring more than HK$2 billion (US$256 million) to
Hong Kong with a 20 to 30 percent rise in retail sales, Xinhua News Agency
predicted. Tourist arrivals in Hong Kong and Macao
from the Chinese mainland in the first quarter reached 827,000, up 47 percent
year-on-year, statistics released by the Ministry of Public Security on
Wednesday show.
