Great Wall to Be Remeasured
Xinhua News Nov. 17, 2005 - China will remeasure the length of the
Great Wall with the help of aeronautic remote sensing technology,
Zhang Ji, deputy secretary-general of the China Great Wall
Institute, said on Wednesday. Zhang said the program will provide
an accurate measurement of the length of the Great Wall, which was
first built by China's first emperor Qinshihuang, then rebuilt and
renovated in the Ming Dynasty. In addition, he said the program
results will provide pictures of the Wall's overall layout, which
is significant for the preservation of this cultural relic. The
current measurement is 7300 kilometers, but is probably not very
accurate, he added. According to the China Great Wall Institute,
the previous measurement they took was based on a sum total of
on-site measurements of all local parts of the Wall. The institute
could not confirm when the last measurement was taken.

The Great Wall at Pedaling (OrientalArchitecture.com)
Before the construction of the Great
Wall in the 17th century, the northern border was protected by a sporadic and
crumbling series of walls that did little to intimidate invaders. In response
to hostile incursions by barbarian tribes, the Ming dynasty undertook the
construction of the Great Wall--a feat of engineering unequaled in the history
of mankind. The exact motives for constructing the wall are unknown, but it
provided many benefits:
A barrier against barbarian attacks;
A fortified highway for moving troops along
the northern border;
A physical boundary between China and the barbarian
lands to the north;
A signal to barbarians of China's territorial
claims...

Construction of the Great Wall Begins 221 BC (North
Park University, Chicago)
The Qin (Ch'in) dynasty ruled China around 200 BC. They unified all of
the provinces and set up a strong system of government. This system
included a huge system of taxes and required public labor of all of
the citizens of China. The unification under the Ch'in Empire allowed
public works projects to be unified on a vastly larger scale. Along
with the use of taxpaying peasants for labor, the rulers also used
convicts and other unfavorable groups to complete massive public works
constructions such as highways, dams and walls.

On the way to lunch at the Great Wall, Peter the guide gave us an
interesting talk on the political and economic changes taking place in
China. He is very proud of the progress China is making, but he does
express a little concern over the fact that he doesn't know his
neighbours in his high rise block, unlike the courtyards of the houses
in the old city. He says people are very happy that they now have
their own shower and toilet, but points out the growing expectations
of material posessions...
