Tunxi Old Street

Beautiful Tours of China

Situated in the center of Huangshan City, Tunxi Old Street, a must-see in Huangshan, is embraced by blue mountains and green waters, with the lofty Hua Mountain in the north and azure blue Xinan River in the south. With a history of hundreds of years, Tunxi Old Street stretches over 4,000 feet (1,273 meters) and is 26 feet (8 meters) wide, which is the best-preserved commercial street built during Ming and Qing dynasties. It was regarded as “the most famous three cultural streets in China” together with Guozijian Street in Beijing and Pingjiang Road in Suzhou.

Tunxi Old Street is known for its ancient dwellings in the Hui architectural style. The end of the street is invisible if you stand at the beginning of the street. Paved with maroon slate, the path of the street is full of countless different-sized shops, which mainly deal in local specialties.

Houses along the street are black-brick-structured, high-wall-fenced and black-tile-roofed, each of which blends with the surroundings harmoniously. Houses on the street are a great perfect reflection of elegance, simplicity, and uniqueness of Hui architectural structure. As the only historical block under national protection, Tunxi Old Streets steals the attention of more than 6 million of visitors domestic and abroad every year.
