Huangyao Ancient Town is located in Zhaoping Couty, Guangxi and about 124 miles (200 kilometers) away from Guilin. Huangyao is a 1,042-year-old town with well-preserved remnants of the past covering almost 250 acres (1 square kilometer). The landform of the ancient town is shaped by karst rock formations, typical of this region of China.
There are eight ancient walkways paved with marble and the quaint residential houses on both sides are characterized by Ming and Qing dynasty styles. The town has preserved over 20 temples, about 10 pavilions, assembly halls, and an ancient stage.
Huangyao Ancient Town was once famous for its trade and commerce in ancient times to the point that the houses along the street were the former stores. During its heyday during the Qing Dynasty (1636 – 1912), there were about 300,000 traders and merchants in the town. Later they were reduced down to about 3,000 operated by two main families – Huang and Yao, which gave the name of the town.
As a culturally-significant ancient town, Huangyao is undoubtedly the place to enjoy exquisite ancient buildings and experience the leisurely local lifestyle. It is easy for tourists to find the beauty of this vaunted town by wondering around its time-honored streets.
The mountain close to the town is the best place to get a panoramic view of Huangyao.
The best time to visit Huangyao is from the September to November when the weather is mild and it is also the time to harvest the vegetables and fruits.
