Sun Yat-Sen, an important political leader in China, is the founder of Republic of China and Nationalist Party of China, who is honored as the “Father of the Republic of China”. He devoted himself to democratic revolution of China all his life. His main political idea is focused on the so-called “Three Principles” of nationalism, democracy and people’s livelihood, which was dedicated to overthrowing the imperial monarchy in China. He led different kinds of revolutions against feudalism; among them, the Revolution of 1911 is the best-known, which overthrew the last feudal dynasty in Chinese history and created a new era of Chinese history.
Sun Yat-Sen died in 1925 in Beijing. Before dying, his last wish was being buried at the foot of the Purple Mountain in Nanjing because it was in Nanjing that the Provincial Government of the Republic of China was founded. After his death, people did what he wished and built the Dr. Sun Yat-sen’s Mausoleum to commemorate him. Each Chinese person shall never forget him and he will live in Chinese hearts forever.
Situated at the foot of the second peak of Purple Mountain in Nanjing, Dr. Sun Yat-sen’s Mausoleum was begun in 1926 and completed in 1929, which is famous for its sophisticated architecture and impressive monument and was listed as a 5A scenic spot by the National Tourism Administration of China.
The Dr. Sun Yat-sen’s Mausoleum represents classic architecture, which blends the styles of traditional imperial tombs and modern architecture. When visiting Dr. Sun Yat-sen’s Mausoleum, the first scene that comes to view is the bronze Dr. Sun Yat-sen’s statue, 9 1/2 feet (2.9 meters) high and weighing one ton, standing on the grand square impressively. Beyond the main vault lies the 1,500+ foot (480 meters) long, 164-foot (50 meters) wide stairway which is composed of 392 marble-made stairs. With its unparalleled charm, it attracts tens of thousands of travelers domestic and abroad annually.
